Better Food Release

Better Food

There is so much we can do to improve our health and that of the planet by the choices we make about what we eat. Local produce, organic, or fairtrade food are all kgood places to start and, better still, we can grow our own.

Love London has masses of events to stimulate the tastebuds and to educate with allotment open days, food shows, debates, mass outdoor feasting, tastings and a blast from the past when a 17th century kitchen garden opens its doors.

The Camden Green Fair has a food theme this year. Highlights include a Fair Trade tea dance and an attempt to break the world tea dance record – over 150 couples dancing at the same time. Camden is also hosting the Love London speakers’ tent featuring a food debate led by our sponsors, the Co-operative Group.

Matthew Hale, Co-operative affairs officer for London said: “The Co-operative Group is proud to be supporting "Better Food" as part of the Love London festival, and helping Londoners to debate, taste, and delight in their food.

“As the UK's leading community retailer, and the nation's biggest farmer, The Co-operative is at the cutting edge of the ethical food debate. This year has seen the launch of our Food Ethical Policy, following the world's largest consumer poll on ethical issues, where over 100,000 members told us what issues matter to them most. In 2008, we've already stopped selling eggs from caged hens in our stores, and converted all our own-brand tea to Fairtrade. We're leading the way on taking action against climate change, and in 2007 we invested over £10m back into the communities we serve,” added Matthew.

Christopher Harris, Love London director added: “We’re delighted to be working with the Co-op who’ve shown such dedication to giving framers a fair deal through their co-operative approach and fair-trade efforts.”
